The Australian Dalcroze Certificate
Overview
Dalcroze Australia is recognized by the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze and FIER (Fédération Internationale des Enseignants de Rythmique) as the official Dalcroze training centre in Australia. Our Director of Studies, Sandra Nash, worked closely with Karin Greenhead (UK) to develop a program specifically for those who train through part-time or intensive courses. We have joined with Louise Mathieu (Canada) and Ava Loiacono (Italy) to form the Dalcroze Eurhythmics International Examinations Board (DEIEB). Part-time courses based on this syllabus are now run in Australia, the UK, Canada, Italy, Hong Kong and Singapore. Dalcroze Australia is pleased to offer the program through our Summer Schools, workshops and where possible, individual coaching.
In order to spread the Dalcroze work throughout Australia and the Asia-Pacific region we need teachers who understand the philosophy and who are certified to incorporate it within their profession, as well as those who train to become Dalcroze teachers.
As there is no full-time course available for Dalcroze studies in Australia, qualification is gained through national and international summer programs and workshops. For this reason it is essential for a candidate on a training track to keep a register of all courses attended as well as a journal of private lessons taken. All applicants will be assessed for prior learning.
The Dalcroze approach is highly individual and as a result, it is not possible to say how long it takes to complete a certain level. A student’s progress is based on previous experiences in music, movement and improvisation and overall suitability for the work. A candidate's application to take any examination is subject to the approval of teachers who have had a chance to observe responses across a range of music and movement activities.
The Dalcroze Certificate program in Australia involves three levels of training:
Foundation Level
The Foundation Level represents a substantial introduction to Dalcroze Eurhythmics and teaching methods and is the first step towards certification. The Foundation Level does not entitle the holder to teach Dalcroze Eurhythmics: the Intermediate Level is the first teaching qualification.
Intermediate Level
The Intermediate Level entitles the holder to state that they use Dalcroze Eurhythmics within their profession.
Certificate Level
The Dalcroze Certificate entitles the holder to teach beginners of any age or occupation and to call him/herself a Dalcroze teacher.
Teachers
In addition, overseas teachers who hold the Diplôme Supérieur are invited to major workshops to teach and examine. Local specialists are also invited to teach movement classes or related options.
